Predator bull calf for Rising Stars.
This is a Predator x Friction/heat seeker/734. This bulls mother is a first calf heifer that looks to be a future foundation donor here at Holtkamp cattle. We are targeting him for the Rising Stars sale.
Rising Stars update.
Chad,
Just wanted to let you know I am very pleased with the two heifers (lot 12 and 22) I purchased in the Rising Star sale last fall. Both heifers calved unassisted and are doing a great job raising very nice calves. I attached a picture of the predator heifer out of lot 22.
Thanks

Ohio report from Birney.
Bill Birney called in to say he put in his Walks on Water x Choo Choo embryos he purchased at our Rising Stars sale. His comment was the way the WOW calves look and what she has done, I can't wait to see them.
He also talked about a One and Only x Draft Pick steer that looks really nice.

WOW steer calf. Nice!
Devon Fraker sent me this Walks On Water steer he purchased from Pete Peterson , IL. I can see why he was so excited about him when he called before I saw the pictures. Pete said he looked good when he was born but keeps getting better.
Immortal heifer from Tavener and Sparks
Immortal x Cunia. I saw this heifer calf earlier this spring and sure thought she has a lot of potential. Robert said she has been coming on super good.

Funny picture story.
I thought this was a funny behind the scenes story. Brain Lutz brought over this Predator heifer to picture. We got her all clipped up and ready to take her picture. Brain ask me if we should take the cow with her to the picture pen. I said no she is gentle and acting good. Well, on the way the cow bawled for her and she bailed thru the electric fence and in the pond up to her head. So we brought her back in and started over. Then we took the cow with her to the picture pen and I think it worked out ok.
Immortal calf at M Lazy Heart Ranch.
I was looking thru Caldwell-Willoughby Sales and went to M Lazy Heart Ranch and seen a very nice offering of calves and seen this Immortal.

Predator himself coming off breeding lease at Rodgers
I just took this picture of Predator as I picked him up from Rodgers as he bred cows for 30 days. I just love his attitude. Put a little feed on the ground and scratch him all over.
Dacota is happy for last day of high school.
Let the celebration begin for him. Mom and Dad have two in college now.(Can you say everything is for sale, because I can)
Poor man's heat detection aid.
I think this is a cheap and effective way to help heat check. It's upside marker paint for contractors. Spray it on the tailheads and when they are in heat the others will rub it off. One can of marker paint can do around 20 head and it only costs about $5. My choice of color was hot pink for the girls.

As the sunsets on another picture day, I want to thank Ty Webster, Andy Jones , Brian Lutz, Skyler and the main man Chris Rosa. Now it's time to get geared for September 17th, 2011 and the Run for the Backdrop. Calf pictures will be coming in the next few days.
Nothing held back when breeding cows for Rising Stars
We getting a good start to breeding cows. These three sires and others for sure will have an impact in Rising Stars V. Stay tunned it will be special.

Getting ready for picture day.
There is alot more to picture day than just running them up and snaping a picture. Today we gave them a bath and a haircut. We took the calves on a test run to the picture pen and so far so good. Here's Skyler raking the picture pen getting it ready to go.
When disposition matters
This twin calf just won the bottle calf lottery. Brody is proud of his brothers new bottle calf project. I think we have another one addicted to the cattle business. Blake is up top doing the work.
What happened behind the scenes
As we are getting ready to take calf pictures tomorrow, it gets me thinking about other pictures we have taken. Like the picture of Walks On Water we used was taken on Saturday afternoon after standing for seven hours and the third day on display in the yards at Denver. Not worried about background or the ground surface, we just took his picture and it turned out awesome.

Looking forward to the Trophy Hunt Classic Show.
I sure am excited to be judging at the Muscatine Ag Learning center tomorrow. It a great facility in a strong area for junior show exhibitors.
Next week I'm going to share some judging experiences on difference of opinions. Several years of judging gets lots of experiences.

WOW calves and report.
Hi Chad,
Attached is a WOW steer out of a really nice red chill factor and the other is a WOW heifer out of the best cow we own (Who Made Who x Hereford/Angus) . These two are some of the best calves we have on the ground this year. I will try to get some more pictures of some of the other WOW calves. They are all nice. Just got my predator semen from SEK today and looking forward to using him and Walks on Water this year.

New bell at the office.
Kim wanted to add this decorative bell by the office. I said it's a tribute to ole Blue on Old School. So next time your here and you think your man enough. Well then as ole Blue said "ring the bell, you pansy!"

College life is hard. I'm told
With finals week going on for Skyler and Winston at WIU, I am told long nights of studying can make you tired. It's kinda like the club calf business, I'm sure there's some truth in that comment.

Predator bull calf video
Predator calf
I received these pictures from Rod and Joel Shumate, IA. I know these pics don't due him justice because I have seen this one and he is really nice. This Predator is out of a Direct Hit (Heat Seeker) daughter. Predator is a great choice for those clubby bred cows that might be carriers.
Nice job Indianola FFA
I wanted to commend Brandon Reynolds and the entire crew at the Indianola FFA Chapter for putting on a well run show this past Saturday. This is another reminder to me of the positive value of showing livestock to the development of young people. The leadership, teamwork and the responsibility it takes to get things done makes this so valuable of a learning tool for anyone. Running a show can sometimes be thankless I'm sure, but very important to the industry none the less. Thanks again.

We are considering to move the Rising Stars sale a couple weeks earlier. There is no doubt this sale is four for four on bad weather days.
